A message that echoes the words, “love heals.”
it hurts to breathe is the title of a short lyrical essay typed up at 3 am a couple of days after Roe v. Wade was overturned. This essay was later expanded into a short story before transforming into an award-winning novella.
Today, this body of work is a platform that advocates for LGBTQ+ and women’s issues, such as access to gender-affirming care and reproductive health services.
how it started
what it became
The mission of our platform, it hurts to breathe, is to empower individuals to navigate the complexities of trauma, mental health, and healing through creative expression, advocacy, and community support. By fostering safe spaces for storytelling, art, and conversation, we aim to amplify voices, reduce stigma, and inspire resilience in those seeking to rebuild and thrive. Together, we transform pain into purpose, creating a world where vulnerability is a strength and healing is a shared journey.
